Background of the study
Libraries in Port Harcourt have become integral to advancing postgraduate research, offering a variety of specialized services that support academic inquiry. These institutions provide not only access to extensive scholarly resources but also training in research methodologies and digital tools that are essential for advanced studies (Brown, 2025). In an era where research is increasingly interdisciplinary, libraries are adapting their services to meet the complex needs of postgraduate students by integrating digital archives, research support software, and collaborative workspaces (Smith, 2023). Recent developments in library practices include the creation of dedicated research centers and the provision of expert consultation services to assist students in navigating vast academic databases (Adams, 2024). Despite these advancements, there remains a gap between the available resources and the actual research needs of postgraduate students. This study investigates the role of libraries in enhancing research capabilities, aiming to identify both strengths and challenges in service delivery and to propose recommendations for further improvement.
Statement of the problem
Postgraduate students in Port Harcourt continue to face challenges in accessing and effectively utilizing library resources for their research needs. Although libraries offer a wide range of services, issues such as insufficient training on digital research tools, inadequate support for interdisciplinary research, and delays in accessing updated materials hinder research progress (Smith, 2023). Furthermore, there is often a disconnect between the resources provided and the specific requirements of postgraduate research projects (Adams, 2024). These problems limit the potential for high-quality academic outputs and necessitate an in-depth evaluation of current library services and their alignment with postgraduate research demands (Brown, 2025).
Objectives of the study
To assess the effectiveness of library services in supporting postgraduate research in Port Harcourt.
To identify gaps and challenges in the provision of research support.
To propose strategies for enhancing library resources and services for postgraduate students.
Research questions
What is the current level of support provided by libraries for postgraduate research in Port Harcourt?
What challenges do postgraduate students encounter in utilizing library resources?
How can library services be improved to better support advanced research?
Significance of the study
This study is significant because it examines how library services contribute to the research efforts of postgraduate students. The findings will provide valuable insights for improving resource allocation, training, and support mechanisms, thereby enhancing the overall quality of academic research in Port Harcourt (Smith, 2023; Adams, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to the investigation of library services facilitating postgraduate research in Port Harcourt Local Government Area, focusing solely on academic support within the library setting.
